Breitling Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 & B02 Cosmonaute (2026): The Hand-Wound Core Collection Arrives

This dispatch updates the Breitling Navitimer Buying Guide with two models Breitling did not announce at any watch fair: the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 and B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute entered the permanent core collection on 22 October 2026.

At a glance

  • The B09 Chronograph 41 is Breitling’s first permanent hand-wound Navitimer in the standard range: USD 7,900 (leather) / USD 8,400 (bracelet)
  • The B02 Cosmonaute adds a 24-hour display and date to the same hand-wound platform: USD 10,600 / USD 11,000
  • Both run Calibre B09/B02 — 70-hour power reserve, COSC-certified, column-wheel vertical-clutch chronograph — in a 41 mm × 13 mm case
  • The existing B01 Chronograph 43 (approx. USD 9,100 on bracelet) remains the buying guide’s recommended pick for all-purpose daily use

From Limited Run to Core Collection

When Breitling unveiled the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 at Geneva Watch Days 2026 in the Miles Davis “Cosmic Dreamer” limited edition, the hand-wound B09 calibre read as an occasional tribute piece. Six weeks later, that assessment became obsolete. On 22 October 2026, Breitling added four permanent references to the standard Navitimer catalogue: two B09 Chronograph 41 models in black and blue, and two B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute models in black. These are not limited editions. They are catalogue watches, made to order through authorised retailers worldwide.

The addition matters because the hand-wound B09 calibre does not appear anywhere else in the permanent steel Navitimer range. Every other steel Navitimer runs the automatic B01 — a movement we cover in full in our Breitling Calibre B01 explainer. The B09’s hand-wound architecture is 0.34 mm thinner at 6.73 mm movement depth, allowing the total case thickness to drop from 14 mm on the B01 43 to 13 mm on the B09 41, and eliminating the rotor entirely to open the caseback to a full sapphire exhibition window. It is a quieter, more considered watch than the B01.

How the B09 Fits the Navitimer Buying Guide

The Navitimer buying guide recommends the B01 Chronograph 43 (reviewed here) as the definitive purchase at around USD 9,100 on bracelet. The principal reasons are automatic winding — more practical for a daily-wear aviation tool — and the larger 43 mm case, which fills the circular slide rule bezel with more authority. That recommendation stands. What the B09 Chronograph 41 creates is a second rational entry point, for a different kind of buyer.

At USD 7,900 on leather — roughly USD 800 less than the equivalent B01 43 on strap — the B09 is not a budget compromise. It is a different proposition: thinner, hand-wound, with a sapphire caseback instead of a solid engraved one. The 70-hour power reserve means you can wind it Friday morning and find it still running Sunday evening, removing the principal objection to hand-wound movements for occasional use. For buyers who already own a B01 daily driver, or those drawn to the meditative ritual of daily winding, the B09 is now a catalogue option rather than a secondary-market hunt for discontinued references.

Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute

The B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute occupies a distinct position in the range. Its movement adds 29 components over the B09 — 273 total, 39 jewels — to deliver two complications the B09 deliberately omits: a 24-hour display, in which the hour hand completes one revolution per 24 hours rather than 12, and a date window positioned within the lower chronograph subdial. The 24-hour complication also improves chronograph precision slightly, measuring to 1/4th-second versus 1/5th-second on the B09.

The Cosmonaute name traces to a 1962 modification Breitling made at NASA’s request: astronaut Scott Carpenter needed a 24-hour dial for the Aurora 7 mission because a standard 12-hour display becomes ambiguous in orbit, where sunrise occurs 16 times per day. The 2026 B02 Cosmonaute is not a commemorative — it is a functional update of that original logic, now running Breitling’s current manufacture calibre with COSC certification and a full sapphire caseback. Black dial only. For competitive context against other hand-wound chronographs in this price tier, our Navitimer vs Speedmaster comparison remains the reference point.

The Platinum Fifty: One Limited Run in the Range

Alongside the four permanent references, Breitling released one limited variant: reference PB02301A1B1A1, a B02 Cosmonaute in stainless steel with a platinum bezel, anthracite dial and steel bracelet, limited to 362 pieces at USD 12,650. The number 362 reflects the total hours Scott Carpenter logged across his NASA career. Movement and dimensions are identical to the standard B02; the premium is for the platinum bezel material only. It is available through Breitling boutiques and will not be listed in the Navitimer buying guide unless it carries to a second production run.

Which Should You Buy

Buyers arriving from the Navitimer buying guide should follow that guide’s principal recommendation — the B01 Chronograph 43 at around USD 9,100 on bracelet — for most use cases. It winds itself, tracks the date, and wears with slightly more case authority on the bezel. The B09 and B02 are specialist additions to a catalogue that was already deep.

Choose the B09 Chronograph 41 if you want a thinner profile (13 mm), an exhibition caseback, no date complication, and you are comfortable with daily winding. At USD 7,900 on leather, it is the most affordable entry to the hand-wound Navitimer family and the natural companion to anyone who already owns the automatic B01. Choose the B02 Cosmonaute if the 24-hour display is functionally relevant — transatlantic schedules, irregular sleep patterns, or a genuine interest in the GMT/24-hour complication that also reads time at a glance. At USD 10,600 on leather, it is not a casual step up from the B09; the extra USD 2,700 buys a specific complication, not a broadly better watch. Both are now permanent: there is no urgency, and ample time for a wrist trial before committing.

What is the difference between the Navitimer B09 and B01?

The B01 is automatic (self-winding, approx. 70-hour power reserve, solid engraved caseback) in a 43 mm case with a date at 3 o’clock. The B09 is hand-wound with an approx. 70-hour power reserve and sapphire exhibition caseback in a 41 mm case with no date. The B09 is 1 mm thinner at 13 mm total case thickness. Both use column-wheel vertical-clutch chronographs and carry COSC certification.

Is the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 a limited edition?

No. The four references added on 22 October 2026 — AB0950211B1X1, AB0950211B1A1 (B09, black), AB0950211C1X1, AB0950211C1A1 (B09, blue) — are permanent core-collection additions. The limited-edition Miles Davis “Cosmic Dreamer” B09 from Geneva Watch Days 2026 remains a distinct, capped-production run.

What is the Navitimer B02 Cosmonaute?

The B02 Cosmonaute adds a 24-hour display (hour hand completes one revolution per 24 hours, allowing AM/PM distinction at a glance) and a date window to the B09 hand-wound platform. The 24-hour complication was originally developed for NASA astronaut Scott Carpenter in 1962. The standard B02 Cosmonaute retails from USD 10,600 on leather strap.

How does the Navitimer B09 price compare to the B01?

The B09 Chronograph 41 starts at USD 7,900 on leather and USD 8,400 on the steel bracelet. The B01 Chronograph 43 starts at approximately USD 8,700 on leather and USD 9,100 on bracelet (prices as at October 2026). The B09 is modestly less expensive; the difference reflects the simpler movement architecture rather than lesser quality.
